Prominent Child and Adolescent Psychologist, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg will share his unique insight into how parents can support the mental health of their children post-COVID at a special live event held at leading Girls’ school, Loreto College Marryatville.

The informative evening will take place on Tuesday June 21st and warmly invites the local Adelaide community to unite as Dr Carr-Gregg draws on his 30 years’ experience working with adolescents, to demystify the latest research around teen mental health and impacts of the pandemic on teenagers.

As part of the event, Dr Carr-Gregg will highlight the five most important strategies for helping adolescent girls deal with common issues including coping with stress, mental health, body image and school/study problems. Giving parents added confidence in their abilities to foster happy and resilient teens in a post-pandemic world.

In speaking to the timeliness of the event, Dr Carr-Gregg said:

“Since the pandemic parents have been understandably feeling the pressure to ‘get parenting right’ and concurrently we are seeing teen issues such as eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse on the rise.”

Last year, 20,207 young people in Australia aged 17-19 shared their most important issues and concerns, with 45.7% selecting COVID as their primary concern. The enormity of the impact of COVID on this generation of young people cannot be underestimated, making it vital for parents to understand how to tackle the ongoing effects of the pandemic into the future.

Parents will also learn how to take a developmental perspective and understand the workings of the adolescent brain to more effectively bolster their children’s mental health.

With a unique understanding of the emotional wellbeing of adolescent girls, Loreto Marryatville Principal and passionate advocate for girls’ education, Dr Nicole Archard will open the floor for the Secrets of Building Happy and Resilient Children and Teenagers event.

Dr Archard said, “As educators we play an influential role in encouraging positive self-talk and strengthening the emotional and social competencies of young girls to ensure they can navigate the complexities of adolescence.”
