150 Years of Loreto: A Living Legacy Transforming Education for Generations of Australian Girls

Loreto College Marryatville to host milestone celebration on 27 July as part of national sesquicentennial of Loreto education.

South Australia's leading all-girls school, Loreto College Marryatville, will host a major community celebration on Sunday 27 July to mark a powerful milestone — 150 years of Loreto education in Australia and South-East Asia, and 120 years since the College was established.

The event forms part of a nationwide anniversary program commemorating the visionary work of Mother Gonzaga Barry, who transformed the educational landscape for girls in Australia by pioneering a model of faith-based, academically rigorous, and socially conscious learning long before it was commonplace.

At a time when the national conversation continues to focus on the future of education, Loreto’s 150th anniversary brings a compelling perspective to the forefront, how a bold idea born in 1875 still shapes some of the most dynamic and values-driven female leaders in Australia today.

“This event is not just a celebration of our past, but a powerful statement about the future of girls’ education in Australia,” said Loreto College Principal, Ms Kylie McCullah.

She continues, “Mother Gonzaga Barry’s approach was visionary, integrating academic excellence with compassion, courage and critical thinking. That legacy is not only alive but flourishing.”

Loreto old scholars include trailblazers in politics, science, law, and the arts, a legacy that speaks to the College’s ongoing commitment to developing courageous, intelligent, and compassionate leaders.

The event will feature student performances, creative installations, heritage exhibitions, and a chance for the community to reconnect through story and celebration. Families and guests can explore the 150-Year Travelling Exhibition ‘Being Faithful to Grace’, attend a special address by artist Rosina Possingham, and enjoy interactive children’s activities inspired by games from yesteryear.
